About the LAS

About

Ludlow Art Society exists to share and promote visual arts to fellow artists and the general public.

We welcome artists of all levels and skills and those interested in the arts, over the age of 16, to join us and share our ideals.

Also by collaboration and friendship with other art societies, organisations and groups we help others and share opportunities.

Our aims

  • To enable members to exhibit their work to the public.
  • To encourage interest in the visual arts.
  • To organise lectures, workshops and other similar activities.
  • To socialise with each other, to arrange social events.

Our history

1946

The Society was founded in 1946 following a series of lectures by Dr Richard Seddon A.R.C.A of Birmingham University, who became our first President. A small group of twelve was fired with enthusiasm and, encouraged by Fred Reeves, the Society was formed and Fred was made its first Chairman.

1949

Fred was followed by Kit Hall and it was he who launched the annual exhibitions. The first was held in the Queens Head Hotel in 1949, 70 works were entered, mostly watercolours, with prices ranging from 2 to 12 guineas.

The exhibitions  then moved to the Town Hall, then the College and finally to St Laurence’s Church in Ludlow.

Joe Webb was a leading light in those first exhibitions, organising and hanging them with the help of Kit Hall and Winifred Burlingham. Her husband, Frank, designed and made the original screens. With the help of the Carnegie Trust, the Society was able to invite excellent tutors to give us demonstrations and tuition.

1990s

From 12 members in 1946, by 1993 membership had risen to 255.

Today

We now exhibit twice a year.  The Society has built a reputation for the excellence of its exhibitions and visitors come from far and wide to view and purchase work.
