The subjectivity of art appreciation should be celebrated and Fiona Morrell’s inspirational speech to open our Summer Exhibition encompassed this.
In a considered and thought-provoking speech, she outlined the view that each piece of work sees the world through different eyes, and that by looking at the world through these different eyes we can understand and learn from each other. Fiona has experience of creativity across many disciplines and indeed many parts of the world and societies, so to have her championing the arts here at Ludlow Assembly Rooms is a real bonus for the town.
Certainly, within the Art Society we have a vast range of subject matter and style to be celebrated. With hung artworks, 3D pieces in ceramic, wood and more, plus unframed originals all looking for a new home, there is something for everyone and our stewards were busy with the card machine all evening.
But the preview is about so much more than pure sales – the opportunity to meet fellow artists and art appreciators, to view so many varied styles and media, to discuss what we love, to enjoy a glass of wine with old friends and new, and simply to soak up the atmosphere. All of this makes the evening so great.
Fiona’s choice for the Speaker’s Award was a small abstract drawing entitled ‘Outpouring of Colour’ by Sandra Winterbottom, who was also a winner of the Vine and Juniper award with her quirky tabletop piece ‘Rivet’. Well done, Sandra. The other Sponsors’ prizes and the winner of the public vote will be announced later.
